Today’s Sacrifice for Our Future

Had to say goodbye to my last four hens today, and my heart is feeling it. 💔 The people buying our house don’t want chickens, and I don’t have a coop to bring them to when I move. My son doesn’t have one either, so re-homing them was the only option.

They were older girls but still laying strong—two six-year-old True Blues who gave us gorgeous blue eggs, a five-year-old Easter Egger with blue-green eggs, and a five-year-old White Leghorn who laid crisp white ones.

Thankfully, they went to someone with chickens, turkeys, and ducks, so they’re in a good place. 🐔🦆🦃 And no, they’re not headed for the stew pot—they’ll keep on clucking in a new flock. Still, I feel a little guilty moving them at their age and hope they settle in okay. Gonna miss them so much. 💙 I have been raising chickens since Spring of 2017! Eight fun years! I also had ducks in my earlier years. I miss them too but it is a lot of work to raise ducks! But I did enjoy the duck eggs more than the chicken eggs! Wish I could buy duck eggs at the grocery store!

Tomorrow after work I’ll start cleaning up the chicken coop. I need to discard the last of the food. I didn’t have much food left as I knew ahead of time that they would be leaving soon. I still have quite a bit of pine shavings left. My neighbor has chickens so I’ll offer it to them. Within the next week or so I’ll hose down the entire coop to get it cleaned up. The buyers wanted me to leave the chicken coop. Maybe at some point they want to get their own chickens but I’m not sure. I do have a lot of junk that I need to take to the dump, such as supplies that I had from the days when I had ducks and roosters too. There’s a fair amount of junk I need to get rid of! But I also want to take some of the supplies with me as I plan to eventually have chickens again. Maybe next year. I have extra water buckets and water bins, etc that I paid good money for. The lights in there are also good lights that I can use as well.

It’s never easy to get good photos of my gals! One of my two True Blues:
